OOU SUG TO HOLD INTER-FACULTY DEBATE, CULTURAL FESTIVAL AND OTHER EVENTS IN SECOND SEMESTER

'Folabi Alawode

Akinbo Afolabi (KEMPES), OOU SUG PRESIDENT

The Students' Union Government (SUG) of Olabisi Onabanjo University under the leadership of Comrade Akinbo Afolabi popularly known as KEMPES, has made it known that the SUG will organize an inter-faculty debate competition, a free training session for students, a cultural festival, a mega carvinal and many other events for the concluding semester of the 2018/19 academic session.

In an interview with a correspondent of OOU TIMES, Comrade Kempes, made it known that his administration has done well and will also do more upon resumption for the rain semester.

OOU TIMES: Can you please tell us your full name, Department and Level?

SUG PRESIDENT: I'm Akinbo Afolabi. I'm a student of Computer Engineering, 500L.

OOU TIMES: We're happy to have you here..

Mr President, Kindly share your experience as the President of the Students' Union of OLABISI Onabanjo University with us?

Also, Can you please tell us, how you've been coping with your studies and your official duties as the SUG President?

SUG PRESIDENT: Being the first President from the great College of Engineering and Environmental Studies, it has been a tasky one. Having to shuttle down 3 hours down to the main campus and as well back. But I've been doing my very best as regards students welfare. Balancing with classes has been fair as well. I thank God.

I'm happy I have competent executives, they are always ready in giving their best to the students populace at large. I really appreciate them all.

OOU TIMES: So far, can you tell us the achievements of your administration for the last semester?

Have you fulfilled any of your manifestos?

SUG PRESIDENT: We have actually moved grounds in which I'm sure the students populace commends alot. Instead of counting our blessings, we intend to pull more strings on giving the students populace the best of what we can. I always say this. But let them watch out for next semester.  😁

OOU TIMES: There was a rumor flying around media last semester that your administration agreed with transport workers to increase transport fare. Is it true? Can you clear the air about this?

Also, the University will be resuming for a new semester   by June 3, what plans are on ground or what is the Union planning to do as to the transportation issue that affects students?

SUG PRESIDENT: Yeah. rumours fly faster. All prices of transport were never increased at any point. Students should be wavy of holding their actual transport fare so as to avoid ripping by the drivers.
Even before the formation of the transport committee. The SUG executives tackled and sorted those rising issues. We made an official statement to that effect. The only days in an academic calendar fares are increased are on matriculation and convocation days, as we all know.

At a time ORU drivers increased their charges to 100 naira but the DSA and the EXECUTIVES immediately got to the end of it because it was referred to as an illegal increment.

Also, upon resumption on June 3. We will make sure the SUG marcopolo buses are always working around the clock, so as to stabilize the densed population. We all know we have less numbers of transport commuters to the highly densed population of student. We have made some moves to the management about bringing in more resource and private investors to come and see what can be deposited into the transportation system.of the town.

OOU TIMES: About the welfare of students living in hostel within PS, they complained bitterly of water scarcity and incessant power outage last semester. What has the SUG done to about it?

SUG PRESIDENT: I believe this is a issue of the past now. The Union made it moves as expected, and even had a committee set up to look into hostel affairs including the management of the school and that of the hostel as well, which our own Comr. Richie (Welfare Director) was actively super involved.

Hostelite now have more electricity supply and water.
I can attest to this fact.

OOU TIMES: Finally, the Students' Union Government organized a Freshers' Football Competition and a Freshers' Party last semester. Is there any activity for fresh students for second semester?

What should students expect from the SUG for second semester?

SUG PRESIDENT: Fresh students are no longer fresh again 😁. We are planning some other activities with the management, like the AISA Games. Also, there will be an inter faculty debate, we are also trying to work out some free training to the students as well. And on socials, the Union is planning on having a Cultural Festival and a Mega Carnival from the stable of the social secretary.
The Aisa Games is an OOU intercampus festival, which is always facilitated by the school management and the Sport Commitee of the Students' Union.

OOU TIMES: Thanks for your time, we're grateful. Have a wonderful day ahead sir

SUG President: You're welcome.
